Flamingos on the Roof: Poems and Paintings
Calef Brown began his career as a tour guide at an early age, when he discovered the simple joy of pointing things out. He is also an artist, writer, and frequently a blue elephant.
He has been working as an illustrator since 1992. His clients include Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, and numerous other newspapers and magazines. Calef's work has been used for advertising, book and CD covers, murals, and packaging. His paintings have been exhibited in N.Y., L.A., S.F., and other places without fancy initials, like Osaka and Rome.
He has also written and illustrated several critically acclaimed children's books beginning with Polkabats and Octopus Slacks in 1998. This was followed by Dutch Sneakers and Fleakeepers (2000), Tippintown: A Guided Tour (2003), and Flamingos on the Roof - a 64 page collection of poems and paintings (2006).
His more recent children's books are Soup for Breakfast (2008) and Hallowilloween: Nefarious Silliness (2010). Boy Wonders will be published on June 2011.
Calef lives and works Portland, Maine, where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Illustration Department of Maine College of Art.
