Micky Dolenz #2
The Monkees
Micky first established himself as a performer at age 10 when he starred in his first TV series, CIRCUS BOY (1956-1958). In his teens, he guest-starred on a number of television shows and also learned to play guitar.
In 1965, Micky was one of four actors (Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, Davy Jones) chosen out of 400 applicants who responded to a trade ad announcing auditions for a new TV show about rock 'n roll band. THE MONKEES became one of the most popular music acts of the decade.
After selling more than 65 million records worldwide as a member of THE MONKEES, Micky has continued to make his mark in other areas of the entertainment business, through his varied career as an actor, director, producer and performer.
In 1977, Micky flew to London to star in Harry Nilsson's West End Musical, THE POINT. He planned to stay three months but remained for 12 years. During that time, Micky honed his behind-the-camera skills by becoming prominent producer-director for the BBC and London Weekend Television. He also directed a feature film, THE BOX, written by Micheal Palin and Terry Jones of Monty Python, and helmed numerous music videos.
When Micky returned to the U.S., he continued his directing career with projects for the Disney Channel and Harmony Pictures, among others.
In 1986, Micky and Peter Tork recorded new tracks for Arista Records and the single, "That Was Then, This Is Now," became their first Top 20 record since 1968. Micky, Peter and Davy Jones subsequently reunited for a 1986 summer tour. At one point in 1987, there were seven Monkees albums on Billboard's Top 200 LP's Chart.
In 1996, The Monkees again joined together this time for a 30 Year Reunion summer tour around America. The response was such that they toured again the following year, this time finishing up in England.
Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork launched a 12-date U.S. tour from November 8 - December 2, 2012. It was the band's first tour since 1997 and highlighted Davy Jones, who died on February 29, 2012, in the show's multimedia content.
In 2012, he released "Remember", a solo cd which is a collection of mostly cover tunes - basically an audio scrapbook of the most important songs in his life that had meant something to him for one reason or another. He spent the summer of 2012 on a series of solo shows with his band and as part of the 2012 Happy Together Tour.
In January 2013, Dolenz embarked on a two-week series of performances in Hairspray; in honor of the 25th anniversary of the film, directed by John Waters; who himself portrayed the Narrator during the performances. Dolenz and his band also performed throughout the spring, including the venerable Flower Power-concerts at Epcot, Florida.
