William B. Davis is best known as The Cigarette Smoking Man from THE X-FILES for which he was proudly voted Television's Favorite Villain (by the readers of US TV Guide) and called 'TV-land's hottest and hippest villain,' by Saturday Night Magazine.
His extensive acting and directing career began in Toronto when he was just 11 years old. He later trained in England at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and worked as a freelance director in British repertory theatres, as well as running the Dundee Repertory Theatre in Scotland. From there, Davis went on to The National Theatre of Great Britain, working with Maggie Smith and Laurence Olivier among others.
In 1965, Davis returned to Canada where he became Artistic Director of The English Acting Program at Canada's National Theatre School and, in 1989, the founder The William Davis Centre for Actors' Study in Vancouver.
Davis has also appeared in a succession of films opposite stars including Penelope Ann Miller, Martin Sheen, Anne Archer, Margot Kidder, Matthew Perry and Brian Dennehy. On the small screen his credits include guest appearances on hit shows including: CONTINUUM, HUMAN TARGET, CAPRICA and SUPERNATURAL.
In 2011, he published his memoir, "Where There's Smoke.... The Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man."
An avid water skier and competitive snow skier, Davis attends fan conventions around the world and gives talks on skepticism and climate change. In September 2011, he married Emmanuelle Herpin and now divides his time between Canada and France.
