Sergio Aragonés
Sergio Aragonés
Cartoonist and writer; MAD Magazine, Groo
Sergio Aragonés is said to be the fastest cartoonist in the world today. He is certainly the most honored, having won every major award in the field, including the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award, and the Will Eisner Hall of Fame Award.
He is best known for his contributions to MAD Magazine since 1963 (over 44 years!). He became famous for his wordless "drawn-out dramas" or "marginals" which were inserted into the margins and between panels of the magazine. The drawings are both horizontal and vertical, and occasionally extend around corners.
In addition, he has a featured section called "A Mad Look At....". As of early 2007, Aragonés's work has appeared in over 400 issues of MAD, second only to Al Jaffee.
In 1967 he began illustrating full stories for DC Comics and he also wrote or plotted stories that were illustrated by other artists, including the Western series Bat Lash and stories for various horror anthology titles.
In the 1980s he created the humorous barbarian comic book Groo the Wanderer with Mark Evanier. Groo quickly became one of the longest-running "creator-owned" comic book properties, outlasting many of the companies that published it. Sergio celebrated the 25th anniversary of Groo in 2007 with a new mini series for the book's current publisher, Dark Horse Comics.
Together, Sergio and Mark have also produced other comics, including Fanboy, Boogeyman, Magnor, Blair Witch? and an acclaimed series in which together, they trash famous characters: Sergio Aragonés Massacres Marvel, Sergio Aragonés Destroys DC, and Sergio Aragonés Stomps Star Wars. For their comic book work, they have received multiple Eisner awards. Sergio has also "soloed" with two all-pantomime series, Actions Speak and Louder Than Words.
Sergio has appeared as an actor-performer on television (Laugh-In and Speak Up, America) and motion pictures (Norman, Is That You? and To Kill A Stranger).
His artwork has appeared on hundreds of advertisements and editorial features, and his animation has been featured on numerous TV shows, including The Shirley MacLaine Special, The Cher Special, The Half-Hour Comedy Hour and Dick Clark's TV Bloopers and Practical Jokes.
Sergio has been named as part of the new writing team on DC Comics' Will Eisner's The Spirit, along with Mark Evanier.
Awards handed out by The Comic Art Professional Society are called "The Sergio", a homage to his work.
