The West Wing, Apocalypse Now
Martin Sheen (aka: Ramon Estevez) is best recognized for his performance as President Bartlet in NBC's The West Wing.
In 2006, he earned dual Emmy Award nominations: one for his guest appearance on the comedy series Two and a Half Men, starring his son Charlie Sheen; and another for his starring role in the acclaimed NBC series The West Wing, created by Aaron Sorkin.
During his seven-year "term" as President Josiah Bartlett, he also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series and garnered four more Golden Globe nominations and five additional Emmy nominations in the same category. In addition, he has been honored by his peers with four Screen Actors Guild Awards: two for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series; and two shared with his The West Wing castmates for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series.
Martin won his first Emmy Award in 1994 for his guest role on the comedy series Murphy Brown. He had previously earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the title role of The Execution of Private Slovik and received Golden Globe nominations for his portrayals of John Dean in Blind Ambition and John F. Kennedy in Kennedy.
Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Martin first gained the attention of critics when he starred in the Broadway production of The Subject Was Roses. He later earned a Golden Globe Award nomination when he reprised his role in the 1968 screen version of the play.
He went on to receive early praise for his chilling portrait of serial killer Kit Carruthers in Terrence Malick's Badlands, and for his performance as the enigmatic Captain Willard in Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War epic, Apocalypse Now. Sheen's other notable films credits include Richard Attenborough's Oscar-winning Best Picture Gandhi, Oliver Stone's Wall Street, Rob Reinber's The American President, written by Aaron Sorkin, Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can, Martin Scorsese's The Departed, and his son Emilio Estevez's Bobby.
Martin is also well-known for being a political activist with a knack for getting arrested. Following his first arrest, which came when he protested President Ronald Reagan's nuclear initiative, he has been involved in many issues, including environmental causes, anti-war demonstrations, and civil rights marches.
Coming in 2010, Flatland: An IMAX 3D Experience: originally created as a straight to DVD movie by Flat World Productions, now being remastered as a 3D film for the giant screen. Flatland is the story of an imaginary world of only two dimensions, inhabited by a variety of geometric shapes, who discover the existence of a third dimension, a world of wonders that they can scarcely imagine. The film features the voice talents of Martin Sheen, Kristen Bell, and Michael York.
Also in 2010, The Way, written for the screen and directed by Emilio Estevez. In this film, Martin plays Tom, an American doctor who goes to France to collect the remains of his adult son killed in an accident while walking the Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James). Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son better, Tom embarks on the historical pilgrimage, leaving his "California bubble life" behind. This movie was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago.
