Wally Bunker
Wally Bunker
Baseball pitcher, Baltimore Orioles
In the 1960s, Wally Bunker was considered a boy wonder, entering the Major League as a mere teenager and becoming Rookie Pitcher of the Year. In 1966, he helped pitch the Baltimore Orioles to a World Series victory against the Dodgers.
Today, he's using that same talented hand to paint, make pottery, play piano, and write and illustrate picture books about a fanciful Lowcountry bird named Wal-de-Mar Wiggins.
He and his wife Kathy, artists in residence at Palm Key Nature Getaway in S.C., team up on everything they create.
Their first book, The Birth of Baseball: A Somewhat True Story of how Wal-De-Mar Wiggins Invented the Grand Ole Game! will be released by Joggling Board Press at the start of the baseball season in 2011.
