Lizzy Caplan is best known for her roles as Janis Ian in Mean Girls, Marlena Diamond in Cloverfield, and April in Hot Tub Time Machine. On television, her most notable roles include Kat Warbler in The Class, Amy Burley in True Blood, Avery in Tru Calling and Casey Klein in Party Down.
She began her television acting career in 1999 playing the minor role of Sara on the critically acclaimed series Freaks and Geeks, most memorably as a disco dancer in the episode "Discos and Dragons". In 2001, she played freak of the week Tina Greer in an episode of Smallville, a role she reprised in 2003. She also appeared in two episodes of the ABC series Once and Again as Sarah, the ex-girlfriend of Mischa Barton's character, Katie Singer.
In 2003, she played Faith Pitt in the tv series about a family with the worst luck in the world, The Pitts. The following year, she gained notice for her portrayal of a character named after the singer-songwriter Janis Ian in Mean Girls.
Lizzy landed a starring role in 2005, playing Marjee Sorelli, the troubled sister in Related, a one-hour dramedy on The WB. In 2006, she played the starring role of Sara Weller in Wesley Strick's thriller, Love is the Drug. She was named one of "10 Actors to Watch" that year by Daily Variety. Later, she was cast in the CBS sitcom The Class as Kat Warbler, one of several elementary-school friends that reunite after 20 years.
In 2008, Lizzy played Marlena Diamond in Cloverfield for which she received a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination. She also had the role of Ami, Kate Hudson's roommate the romantic comedy My Best Friend's Girl and guest starred as Amy Burley, the V-addict girlfriend of Sookie Stackhouse's brother, Jason, in 6 episodes of HBO's True Blood.
She was a regular cast member in the critically acclaimed Starz ensemble comedy Party Down (2009-2010), playing a struggling comedienne who is part of a catering crew. That same year, she appeared in Danny Boyle's 127 Hours. Based on a true story, she played the sister of hiker Aron Ralston (James Franco) who was forced to amputate his own arm after being trapped by a boulder.
In early 2012, Lizzy premiered two films at the Sundance Film Festival: Save the Date and Bachelorette, appeared as Julia in several episodes of the Fox sitcom New Girl, and starred in Showtime's drama pilot Masters of Sex (not yet released) portraying 1960s human sexuality pioneer Virginia Johnson opposite Michael Sheen as William Masters. The project is an adaptation of Thomas Maier's book "Masters of Sex: The Life And Times Of William Masters And Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Love".
