Smallville, The Vampire Diaries
Cassidy Freeman landed her break-out role as the villainous and eerily enticing Tess Mercer, the manipulative ruler of the LuthorCorp, in The CW's hit drama Smallville.
True to her eco-friendly nature, she was born on "Earth Day," and raised in her hometown of Chicago, Ilinois, with older brothers Crispin and Clark, also actors, and spending time in Montana where her parents have since moved to be cattle ranchers. Having attended the private academy of the Latin School of Chicago throughout her adolescent years, Freeman studied abroad in Bolivia before settling in Vermont, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Middlebury College in 2005 with degrees in theater and Spanish.
She took another break from the U.S. when she traveled to Vietnam with her mother before landing the lead role as Gemma, the girl who gives up speaking for the Catholic tradition of Lent, in the acclaimed New York stage production of Cigarettes and Chocolate, alongside theater veterans Jimmy Ryan and Jesse Hooker. It was in this moving performance that Freeman was noticed by a talent manager from Los Angeles.
Freeman executive produced and stars alongside her real-life brother Clark in the buzzed-about gritty Indie flick, Yellow Brick Road (2010). Based on the true events that occurred in a remote New Hampshire town, the thriller follows a group of friends who brave the woods to search for an entire town that went missing in the 1940s.
Recently, she appeared in three episodes of NBC's The Playboy Club which, sadly, was cancelled much too quickly. She has now landed a part on The CW's The Vampire Diaries, which has the potential to go multi-episode. Per TVLine, beginning in Episode 16 of the currently airing Season 3, Cassidy will play Sage, someone who is described as "sexy and fearless, with a devilish smile." Appearing in flashbacks circa 1912, Sage's allure is felt by the Salvatore brothers as well as by the Original family.
When she's not busy working, she chooses to travel. Among her hobbies are hiking, quilting, playing volleyball, surfing and singing in her family band "The Real D'Coy." She is passionate about environmental preservation and fulfillment of resources as an active member of the "Heal the Bay" charity, which works toward cleaning up and protecting the west coast waters. She also teaches and tutors children in Santa Monica as a part of the "Virginia Avenue Project." Aside from her philanthropic tendencies and devotion to her craft, Freeman always takes time to give some love and attention to her 50-pound, Swiss Mountain dog, "Shasta."
