Rob Reiner, has enjoyed great success in the entertainment industry as an actor, a writer and a director. He has directed some of the most popular and influential motion pictures of the past two decades. It was, however, his Emmy Award winning portrayal of Michael Stivic, the son-in-law of Archie Bunker in the hit series ALL IN THE FAMILY that made him a household name.
His early directing credits include THIS IS SPINAL TAP, STAND BY ME, and THE PRINCESS BRIDE. As a principal and co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment, Reiner's succession of box office hits includes WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, MISERY, and A FEW GOOD MEN.
His television credits include NEW GIRL, 30 ROCK, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, THE ROCKFORD FILES, THE ODD COUPLE, THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, THAT GIRL, and THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW.
In addition to filmmaking, Rob Reiner is a tireless advocate for early childhood development programs and policies. In 1997, he was instrumental in initiating the White House conference on the subject, produced a prime-time television special for ABC, and launched the I Am Your Child foundation to continue and expand the national public awareness and engagement campaign.
In 1998, he chaired the successful California Children and Families Initiative (Proposition 10) to improve early childhood programs in the state. In 1999 he was appointed by Governor Davis to serve as Chairman of the Commission (now First 5 California) which oversees Prop 10's implementation and the distribution of over $600 million a year to early childhood development and education programs in all of California's 58 counties.
In 2004, I Am Your Child evolved into Parents' Action for Children to reflect an expanded mission: organizing a national parent's movement to ensure that our nation's policies strengthen America's children and families. Parents' Action for Children develops parent education materials, connects parents with one another, and fights for issues such as early education, after-school programs, health care, and high quality, affordable child care.
Also active in environmental efforts, Reiner was recruited by open space advocates and conservationists to help in their effort to save Amhanson Ranch. With Co-Chair Chris Albrecht, Reiner and a team of grassroots activists and organizations, including Heal the Bay and NRDC, successfully halted a proposed development that would have devastated a large Santa Monica Mountains watershed and destroyed the indigenous endangered species and irreplaceable habitats. Now a permanently preserved state park, the 2,900-acre expanse is under the care and protection of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
Reiner and his wife Michele Singer have three children.
