Ben Foster was born in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in Fairfield, Iowa where there were four community theaters. His passion for acting was discovered early on, and after starring in the title role in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown", put on by one of the community theaters, he wrote, directed, and starred in his own play at age 12, a play that won second place in an international competition. After attending Interlochen Theater Arts Summer Program at age 14 in Interlochen, Michigan, it was only a matter of time before Ben dropped out of high school at age 16 and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he was almost immediately snapped up for the Disney series FLASH FORWARD (1996), in which two friends narrate the highs and lows of high school.
His film debut was a small role in the little-seen KOUNTERFEIT (1996), after which he was solicited for several made-for-TV movies and appearances on television series before reaching his next milestone, LIBERTY HEIGHTS (1999), where he played alongside Adrien Brody and Joe Mantegna as a rebellious Jewish teenager who engages in a forbidden relationship. His first starring movie role was in the film GET OVER IT (2001), where he starred with Kirsten Dunst as a lovelorn teenager, and then the beautifully crafted BANG BANG YOU'RE DEAD (2002), in which he played Trevor Adams, the starring role. In 2005, he landed the role of Marshall Krupcheck in the movie HOSTAGE, an intense piece of acting that made people begin to take notice and recognize his potential and talent.
Since then, he has played major roles in numerous movies such as X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (2006), ALPHA DOG (2006), 3:10 to YUMA (2007), THE MESSENGER (2009), THE MECHANIC (2011), RAMPART (2011), KILL YOUR DARLINGS (2013), and LONE SURVIVOR (2013).
On television, Foster shared the SAG Award for Best Ensemble Cast for his work in the 2003 season of HBO's critically acclaimed drama SIX FEET UNDER in which he portrayed Russell Corwin for three seasons. He was also a part of the Emmy nominated HBO telefilm THE LARAMIE PROJECT. He appeared in several episodes of the cult hit FREAKS AND GEEKS and his lead performance in Showtime's BANG BANG YOU'RE DEAD garnered him a Daytime Emmy award.
Foster made his Broadway debut in 2013 in a revival of Lyle Kessler's play ORPHANS opposite Alec Baldwin and Tom Sturridge. In 2014, he made his London stage debut in a new production of Tennessee Williams' A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE as Stanley Kowalski alongside Gillian Anderson (Blanche du Bois) and Vanessa Kirby (Stella) and directed by Benedict Andrews. This production was presented on stage once again in 2016 at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY.
On big screens in the past three years (2015 - 2017), he was seen as Lance Armstrong in THE PROGRAM, Stephen Frears' film about the infamous cyclist; as Medivh in WARCRAFT based on the popular game of the same name (directed by Duncan Jones); as Richard Livesey in THE FINEST HOURS with Chris Pine based on a true story about a daring rescue by the Coast Guard off the coast of Cape Cod in 1952; as Bertrand Zobrist in INFERNO with Tom Hanks (directed by Ron Howard); and as Tanner Howard in HELL OR HIGH WATER - he won an Independent Spirit Award for this role.
