Julie Newmar
Catwoman
Known for being the quintessential Catwoman, Julie Newmar dropped out of college to become a choreographer/ dance director for Universal Studios. She became an overnight sensation as the one and only Stupefyin' Jones in LI'L ABNER. Julie would recreate the same role on Broadway 42 years later, in the same costume. She won a Tony for her first speaking role in the hit comedy MARRIAGE-GO-ROUND (Claudette Colbert and Charles Boyer). She also toured in the National Company, opposite Joel Gray, in STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF. Her legs were insured for $10 million.
She has guest-starred in many now-favorite TV episodes, on shows such as THE MONKEES, COLUMBO, LOVE AMERICAN STYLE, GET SMART, STAR TREK, F TROOP, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, TWILIGHT ZONE, and ROUTE 66. The part she's most fondly remembered for is Catwoman, in the 1966 BATMAN television series.
In 1995, Amblin Entertainment produced a movie named after her, TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! JULIE NEWMAR. The title refers to a symbolic autographed photo of Julie Newmar that the trio of New York drag queens (Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo) carries with them on their road journey of discovery. In the film, Julie appeared as herself.
In the 1980s, Julie appeared in nine films while raising her son. A mother at 49 and divorced, she attended UCLA and took courses so she could more effectively run her own real estate business.
In her 60s, she became a modeling sensation in Paris for Thierry Mugler and appeared among the fashion world's most gorgeous divas in George Michael’s music video TOO FUNKY.
With cutting-edge sensibility, Julie retrained herself into the Internet world of social media. Active on Facebook, Julie is working on several books and various videos to be seen on the media section of her website.
An avid gardener, Julie's gardens are renowned. There is a rose, daylily and begonia named after her.
